Texas Long Range Plan for Technology, 2006-2020
Educator Preparation and Development is the second of four areas listed on the Texas Long Range Plan for Technology, 2006-2020. This area relates to all educators and what are the teacher expectations with respect to technology. Included in this key area are new professional development, continuous learning, technological integration, and distance and online learning. On my campus and in Texas, this area has returned the lowest scores to reaching the Target Tech level of progress on the STarR Chart survey. Also, it has received a Developing Tech level of progress for this area with 68.7 % in 2009-2010. I believe this is an accurate result relating to my campus as our use of technology is not quite up to par. The trend on my campus is that it has not really changed the last few years. This is probably true because we have not increased the effort as a district. The budget does not allow to better our student to computer ratio. All of the classrooms have one computer but it is for the teacher. This makes it difficult to incorporate the technology with the students. Teachers need to model the new technology on their computers while a student is at their own computer practicing what they have just learned. Also, we do not have enough professional development to further our knowledge in technology. The few sessions we do have our short and they are not ongoing without much follow-up. I believe these are the reasons why less than 40 % of the educators meet the SBEC standards. To improve in this area the district needs to increase each schools budget for technology and allow more training days specifically for technology staff development.
